The Raspberry Pi foundation has revealed that it has passed the 5 million unit milestone for sales of its eponymous microcomputer. The feat took just under three years to achieve. The foundation started out with a modest initial goal of selling only "a few thousand" Raspberry Pis over its lifetime, according to TechCrunch. Now the organisation now can proudly claim the title of "the biggest selling UK computer manufacturer ever".

Considering that the credit-card sized device only passed the two million units sold mark merely 15 months ago, the figure is pretty remarkable, especially for a barebones board meant for schools and homebrew projects. The foundation broke down the figures and said that around 3 million sales are of the original Raspberry Pi Model B, 1.5 million of the Model B+ boards and around 100,000 and 150,000 units shipped were the lower-end Model A and Model A+ computers. Impressively, the foundation estimates it has already sold half-a-million units of the Raspberry Pi 2 model, launched just weeks ago.

Initial Apple Watch Orders, also 5 million

Even though the 5 million sales milestone was celebrated heartily by the Pi Foundation, the number pales when compared to the number of devices the tech titans can shift. In related device-shifting news Apple has placed an initial Watch order of between five and six million units in preparation for April's product launch, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The Cupertino company is anticipating demand for its first wearable somewhere close to initial shipments of the original iPad. Quoting people familiar with the matter, the WSJ says that the entry-level Apple Watch Sport model will take up half of the production order, while the mid-tier Apple Watch is expected to account for one-third of output. The high-end Apple Watch Edition which features an 18-karat gold casing will take up the remaining orders, and the firm plans to start producing over one million units of the gold model per month in the second quarter.

Congratulations RPi! :D I'm still surprised by the amount of buzz around RPi (and the “me too” models that came out later), but am hopeful that this'll spawn at least a few kids more interested in getting out a soldering iron than download the latest Candy Crush.

Maybe it's me just being negative, but I'm pretty unimpressed by the iWatch line up. They strike me as pretty ugly and the kind of thing that people poked fun at when similar stuff launched from Samsung, LG, etc last year. Current ‘droid ones - Moto 360, G Watch R, etc seem to be a lot more visually appealing. That said, like others, I’m unconvinced that this years smartwatch will still be usable in 3-4 years time, so a bad piece of spending - especially at the Ā£200+ prices being asked. That kind of money would get a reasonable Seiko, which'd still be usable 20-30 years later.
I'm unconvinced by smartwatches in general, especially at current prices, but surely the price can only drop. The issue is that the components are actually very cheap and integrated, and miniaturisation is no longer the ultra-premium issue it once was.

So it must be that most of the cost is either licensing patents, or the watch body and strap (e.g., the gold plated iWatch). Or the brand name on top.

The round watches look more appealing too, and the Android Wear UI has a round UI mode. I just don't care about notifications that much to need easier access to them on my wrist.
They are another technology thing that Apple can say they've revolutionised….

I never bothered with the original Pi, but I must say I think I have already had my money's worth out of the Pi 2. It is actually quite usable whereas I think the original Pi was more a solution looking for a problem.

So yes, congrats Pi Foundation. Now chop chop with a 64 bit version; would that be a Pi64 ? :D
I'm waiting for Windows 10 for Raspberry PI 2 then I'll be getting one too!
